Some Key Points to Emphasize:

  • Don't neglect Hahamongna because of the Big Dig program
  • Analyze the most comprehensive approach to stream and habitat restoration
  • Sediment management is a key part of stream and habitat restoration throughout the Arroyo Seco
  • Pasadena's Lower Arroyo Seco is an ideal site for channel removal
  • Los Angeles' parks in the Arroyo need to be integrated into Arroyo River Parks.

Earth Month Volunteers Make a Difference in the Arroyo

This past April Arroyo Seco Foundation was proud to host a number of events in honor of Earth Day. The Southern Calfornia Gas Company sponsored and came out in force for a big day of invasive species removal in the Arroyo Seco Canyon on April 24th. On April 18th we joined with FoLAR to hold La Gran Limpieza at the Confluence of the Arroyo Seco and Los Angeles River, with over 50 volunteers joining us. CalTech Y joined us for their Make-A-Difference Day on April 4th, when 10 students worked hard to restore the native plantings at Flint Wash Bridge in Hahamongna Watershed Park.

Spring at Hahamongna Cooperative Nursery

With two nursery beds full of planted seeds and young seedlings, our nursery is flourishing. Many thanks go out to the students from Pasadena City College's Environmental Science class taught by Professor Peter Cross who joined our work days, yanking out the mustard forest that sprang up early in the month, as well as our stalwart volunteers Connie, Ginger, Alan, and Antonio.

All skill levels are welcome. Please RSVP and plan to bring a water bottle, sun protection, and your favorite gloves. Email a message to nursery@arroyoseco.org to join our weekly work days. See the calendar section below for details.
