2003-08-087:30 PM"Spirit of the Arroyo" An exhibit of street puppets from ArrNeighbors for Peace & Justice Northeast present: "Spirit of the Arroyo" An exhibit of street puppets from Arroyo Fest August 8 - September 25, 2003 at Flor y Canto 3706 N. Figueroa Ave. Northeast Los Angeles 323.276.8350 Reception: Friday, August 8th, 7:30pm Featuring the video: "Ah! The Hopeful Pageantry of Bread and Puppet" By Dee Dee Halleck and Tamar Schumann Info on the video: The Bread and Puppet Theater has been a source of hope and vision for people all over the world. Their performances have been in theaters, on college campuses, in churches and parks, and above all in the streets. Bread and Puppet has taught generations of activists to construct large puppets, to paint iconographic banners and to print mobilizing posters. Filmmakers Dee Dee Halleck, academy award nominated media activist, and Tamar Schumann, daughter of B & P founder Peter Schumann, have drawn from over two hundred hours of video material. The film is an expression of the progressive vision that Bread and Puppet represents. The film includes scenes from performances, puppeteers building puppets and props, weeding the garden, peeling the garlic and kneading the bread, strung together with the unique B & P musical combination of marching band, rumba and sacred harp singing. Neither a straight documentary nor an "educational" rendition of theater history, AH! is more like a Bread and Puppet movie than a film ABOUT Bread and Puppet. Bread and Puppet has shown that we can create new worlds, starting with very humble and accessible tools such as cardboard and cloth. Their collective spirit and the magnitude of their vision makes their work an important model for the future. -Colectivo Flor y Canto Flor y Canto Centro Comunitario 3706 N. The Pueblos occupy nearly thirty villages in New Mexico and Arizona, where they have preserved their ancient traditions through centuries of contact with other cultures. They are not one, but several groups, speaking six different languages, and though cuturally similar, their traditions differ from one village or cluster of villages to the next. The history of Pueblo pottery is a story decline and revival. The popularity of Native American art has kept the Pueblo pottery tradition alive and many potters are recognized among the world's leading artists.

Thousands of the 70,000 volunteers who pitched in last year on National Public Lands Day helped improve habitats. They built nests for the endangered least tern in California...raked lands ravaged by forest fires and planted seedlings in Colorado...removed invasive algae damaging native corals in Hawaii. New challenges for preserving habitats await this year's National Public Lands Day volunteers. National Public Lands Day volunteers are keeping the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the "tree army" that exemplified land stewardship from 1933-1942, to preserve and protect America's natural heritage Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni President Bill Baily and Joe DeCenzo pose with Miss USA, Shuantay Hinton Last year, National Public Lands Day teamed up with its federal agency partners for a premier event in Anacostia, Washington, D.C. Several federal and local land management organizations teamed up with several non-profit organizations at four locations on the Anacostia River on National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day is a unique public-private partnership involving many federal, state, and local land agencies. These agencies work closely with business partners such as Toyota, and numerous non-profit organizations. The National Environmental Education & Training Foundation manages, coordinates, and generates financial support for the program. Take Pride in America® partners with NEETF for National Public Lands Day. Take Pride in America is partnering with the National Environmental Education & Training Foundation to sponsor Take Pride in America events on September 20, National Public Lands Day. This year the volunteers will focus on restoring habitat on public lands, providing homes for diverse species of plants and animals. Take Pride is committed to promoting awareness about citizen stewardship and increasing volunteer opportunities for the public. As part of USA Freedom Corps, Take Pride is dedicated to fostering a culture of service to others. For more information visit www.TakePride.gov and remember....."It's your land, lend a hand."
