2004-06-203:30 PMArroyo Seco River WalkThis Sunday, June 20, at 3:30 join Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) on our 67th "Down by the River Walk" along the Arroyo Seco. Track this tremendous tributary to the Los Angeles River, including an introduction to North Branch Creek targeted for "daylighting." Meet at Montecito Heights Rec. Center at the end of Mosher Ave., one block above Avenue 43 and the 110 Freeway. We'll be meeting at the parking lot of Montecito Heights Park, then walking through the lower Arroyo Seco. The Arroyo Seco is one of the most prominent tributaries of the Los Angeles River. The Arroyo Seco originates in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Pasadena, flows along what is today the Pasadena Freeway, then joins the LA River just north of downtown Los Angeles. The confluence of the Arroyo Seco and the LA River is an important historic site, where some of the first European explorers encountered "a lush and pleasing spot, in every respect" and decided to site their mission which ultimately grew into the city around us today. The stretch of the lower Arroyo Seco where we will be walking is one of the earlier concrete flood prevention projects, so the project has a lot more personality than later flat paving. The channel lining shows cobblestone patterns of arroyo stones, and has small sections cut out where wise old sycamore trees grow. The creek is bordered by many parks, also with tall sycamores. The walk is casual, non-strenuous, open to all ages. Dogs welcome on leash. Canceled if raining. Directions: By Bike: From upstream, take the Arroyo Seco Bikeway - our starting place is its lower terminus. By Transit: Take the North Figueroa bus, get off at Avenue 43. Walk east 2 blocks on Ave 43. Turn left on Mosher, and walk to the park at the end of the street. By Car: Take the Pasadena Freeway, exit Avenue 43. Go left on Ave 43 one block to Mosher. Turn north on Mosher go to the end of the block.

2004-10-268:00 PMWildfires + Rain = Debris FlowsWildfires + Rain = Debris Flows - Sue Cannon, USGS Golden Debris flows can be one of the most hazardous consequences of rain on recently-burned hillslopes. The deaths of sixteen people during the Christmas Day 2003 storm that impacted recently-burned hillsides in southern California highlight the most drastic consequences of post-wildfire debris flows. The increased occurrence of catastrophic wildfires in the western United States, and the encroachment of development into fire-prone areas, has resulted in the need for tools and methods to identify and quantify the potential hazards posed by debris flows from burned watersheds. In this talk we will describe an approach developed to answer some of the questions fundamental to post-fire debris-flow hazard assessments - what, where, why, when, how big, and how often? Come and find out what is being done to understand and decrease the risk of debris flows in your area. All lectures are free and start at 8pm in Beckman Institute Auditorium on Caltech campus in Pasadena. Plenty of free parking is available.
