The rain that poured onto our streets and neighborhoods made its way, through the storm drains, to the Arroyo Seco. In most spots, the Arroyo is clad in cement to facilitate quick conveyance of water through our cities and into the ocean. However, in two sections of Pasadena, the Arroyo flows in a natural streambed. The February 6 hike will explore the natural section beneath the Colorado Street Bridge. We will see how this area fared in the storm, take a look at the City of Pasadena’s habitat restoration activities, see some Arroyo art and learn about native plants.
The walk will depart at 2:00 pm from Brookside Park, Parking Lot I near the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena. We will return to our starting location around 4:00 pm. Participants should bring water and be prepared for the weather because this hike will take place rain or shine. Please join us for this shared experience in the Arroyo Seco.

Don’t miss this unique local opportunity to hear him discuss "Protecting Our Forests For A Generation To Come."
With the final management plans for our nearby national forests due to be released soon, this is an ideal opportunity to learn how you can make a difference in shaping the future of our "backyard" forests.
Attorney General Bill Lockyer has long been a champion of California's environment. He has fought hard against numerous efforts by the federal government to undermine and ignore key environmental safeguards. An effective leader in defending our state's magnificent national forests, he has filed lawsuits to stop Bush administration plans for increased logging in the Sierra Nevada and in Giant Sequoia National Monument. In southern California, he has worked to help get the best management plans possible to protect the Angeles and Cleveland national forests.
There will be a reception at 7 p.m., free and open to the public, as is the main event. In addition to Bill Lockyer, the program will feature an update on simple actions we can all take to better protect our local forests from the many threats they face, from proposals for a freeway though a forest and massive new power transmission lines to a hydroelectric dam in a proposed wilderness area and more motorcycles on our back country trails.
The program is cosponsored by the Southern California Forests Campaign and the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s Forest Committee. The forests campaign is a new club effort to bring people together to protect our southern California national forests for a generation to come and to keep them outstanding places to visit. |

2005-07-12 | 7:00 pm | The River, Book Three | World premiere of Lewis MacAdams’ The River, Book Three, a continuation of his mini-epic about his life and work among the trash bags and red-wing blackbirds of the much-maligned Los Angeles River.
About Lewis MacAdams:
Poet, activist, journalist Lewis MacAdams is the author of a dozen books and tapes of poetry, and his poems have appeared in many anthologies over the last twenty-five years.
As a journalist, in the early 80’s, he was the American correspondent for the popular French magazine Actuel. From 1980 to 1982, he was the editor of WET, “the Magazine of Gourmet Bathing and Beyond,” a Los-Angeles-based, internationally-circulated bi-monthly of the avant-garde. Since the mid-80’s he has been a contributing editor of the L.A. Weekly. He writes regularly on culture and ecology for Rolling Stone, the L.A. Weekly, Men’s Journal, L.A. Times, and Los Angeles Magazine. His book, Birth of the Cool: Beat, Bebop and the American Avant Garde was published in 2001. He is currently writing a biography of Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, which will be published in 2006.
In 1985, he founded Friends of The Los Angeles River, a “40 year art work” to bring the Los Angeles River back to life. In the years since, FoLAR has become the River’s most important and influential advocate. Two of its current major goals are to create a Los Angeles River Conservancy to oversee restoration of the river, and a River Watch program to improve the River’s water quality and target polluters. In 1991, MacAdams received the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society’s annual Conservation Award.
A new collection of poems, The River: Books One, Two & Three, (to be published by Blue Press in June of 2005) takes the Los Angeles River as its metaphor, weaving the story and song of the poet, activist and journalist as these three roles form the confluence which is the man.

2005-07-18 | 2:00 PM | HSRA to Present at Ad Hoc River Committee Meeting | High Speed Rail Authority to Present at Ad Hoc River Committee Meeting. Carrie Pourvahidi, Deputy Director of the High-Speed Rail Authority, will make a presentation at the Ad Hoc River Committee on July 18, 2005 at 2:00pm (located at City Hall, 200 N. Spring Street, Room 1010). This is our opportunity to comment on the potential designation of a "preferred alignment" for high-speed rail that would severely and unnecessarily impact the Los Angeles River Master Plan and Taylor Yard and Cornfield State Parks. Although high-speed rail will benefit all Californians, there is no need for the system to fracture our communities or degrade our parks and river.
This is an important opportunity to voice our concerns. The High- Speed Rail Authority needs to hear from us.
