2008-01-248:00 PMHistory of JPLOur premier public screening of the new documentary Explorer 1: Beginnings of the Space Age, almost exactly 50 years after the launch of Explorer 1, will be followed by discussion and Q&A with writer, producer, and director Blaine Baggett, JPL's Executive Manager of Communications. At the end of World War II, the fledging efforts of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory were at a crossroads. Should this outgrowth of Caltech, involved in building rockets for the U.S. Army, continue on in peace time? The answer came with the coming of the Cold War. JPL would continue its Army rocket development, culminating with the Corporal and Sergeant missiles, which were deployed in Europe as a nuclear deterrent to the Eastern Bloc. But by 1956 JPL was already seeking a new, non-military role and had set its ambitions on teaming with the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama to launch the first satellite into space. Denied that opportunity in 1956 by the Eisenhower administration, JPL and the Von Braun rocket teams could only watch in frustration as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first satellite, in October 1957. Following the explosion of the U.S. Vanguard rocket just weeks after Sputnik, the White House in desperation turn to the JPL and Huntsville team, which successfully launched Explorer 1 into orbit less than 90 days after being given the go-ahead. The discovery by Explorer 1's instruments of what came to be known as the Van Allen radiation belts was the world's first space science, and set JPL on the path to become the world's preeminent explorer of the solar system and beyond.

Stops include the Sepulveda Basin in the Valley, the Glendale Narrows near Griffith Park, the Arroyo Seco confluence, an L.A. Ave 26 #250, (323) 223-0585 or folar.org.
2008-02-029:00 amA River Runs Through ItTitled “A River Runs Through It: Charles Lummis and the Culture of the Arroyo Seco,” the workshop will be presented as an LAUSD-approved one-point credit class and the curriculum will include seminars and presentations by poets, authors, naturalists, a Native American storyteller, and historians. A broad cross-section of Arroyo locations will serve as classrooms for the program, which will include docent tours of the area’s museums, field studies and nature walks through urban wilderness areas. Carmela Gomes, a retired LAUSD teacher who serves as Educational Director for the Lummis Day Community Foundation, has designed the 15-hour course in cooperation with the Los Angeles Unified School District and will lead eight additional presenters representing a broad cross section of disciplines and interests for this uniquely multi-disciplinary curriculum. Presenters for the educational workshop will include poet Suzanne Lummis, Arroyo Seco Foundation Director Tim Brick, native plants expert Christopher Nyerges, author and artist Don Newton, artists Deborah Thomas, instructor and Gabrielino/Tongva tribal council member Julia Bogany, Arroyo Scenic Byway founder Nicole Possert and Highland Park Heritage Trust member and raconteur Virginia Neely. 2008-02-287:00 PMWhere in the World Will our Energy Come From? Who should come Everyone! This is NASA we're talking about! Details Where in the World Will Our Energy Come From? Jet Propulsion Laboratories: California Institute of Technology presents this very exciting lecture on Feb 28: Where in the world will our energy come from? What would it take for the world to get away from fossil fuels and switch over to renewable energy? It takes more than willingness to buy a Prius or to install solar panels on your roof. If we want to use wind, solar thermal, solar electric, biomass, hydroelectric and geothermal energy it will take a lot of planning, and willingness on the part of governments and industry. It takes R&D investment, a favorable price per unit of energy to get anyone to produce alternative energy, and plenty of resources to create those energy sources. Speaker : Dr. Nate Lewis George L. But we had no choice; it's a mater of live or die." — Guillermo Leiva Shimmering with life like a cornucopia of colorful vegetables, this vibrant, hopeful film brings to light one of the most important stories of the last two decades – how a small island nation responded to a sudden and dangerous drop in oil supplies. When Cuba's hefty subsidies of oil, food and other goods ceased after the Soviet Union collapsed and the U.S. tightened its embargo, Cubans suffered terrible hardships. In a `peak oil' crisis similar to one the entire world will soon face, electric power became intermittent, transportation nearly stopped, parts were unavailable, and without fertilizers and tractors, food production declined to precarious levels. But Cuba bounced back. This inspiring film offers us a living model of sustainability, as Cubans tell the remarkable story of their nation's recovery and its transition to organic agriculture, renewable energy, effective mass transit, lowered consumption, better health, and stronger communities. Potluck Details Bring something (vegetarian) to contribute to the potluck - bring enough food for yourself/family and a bit to share. 2008-10-026:00 pmThe Isar and the Los AngelesFriends of the Los Angeles River and the Goethe Institut have partnered to welcome a delegation from Munich that successfully shepherded the restoration of its own industrialized river, the Isar, into a “re-naturized” resource that provides both flood protection and recreation to the citizens of Munich, Germany. Much like the Los Angeles River, the Isar has a history of heavy flooding. In the early 20th century, with the construction of several power plants, the river was engineered into a linear path, giving the city an economic boost but seriously harming the river’s alpine character, accessibility and vegetation. And in many parts of Munich, the rigid walling-in did not provide effective flood protection. In 1995, a working group, Isar-Plan, was founded with the goal of returning the river to a natural and usable state. Comprised of citizens, grass roots organizations, and local and state experts, Isar-Plan began its renovation of the river in 2000. Thus far, eight miles of the Isar have been re-naturized. As the river wends past flowered meadows, the citizenry of Munich sunbathes along sandy banks, picnics under shade trees, bicycles along gravel paths and cools off in the river’s waters. Surfers even make use of the rapids! A fishway (at left) has been built to promote the upstream migration of aquatic life, and fishermen enjoy their sport here. And the major storm “Norbert” in 2005 — the biggest rainfall in 50 years — had no flood impacts on the city. Once the home to steelhead, grizzlies, willows and sycamores, the Los Angeles River was the source of water and life; the birthplace of downtown Los Angeles. Six decades after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started encasing the Los Angeles River in concrete to prevent flooding; the City of Los Angeles faces an unprecedented opportunity to reverse the past. Adopted by City Council in 2007, the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan sets forth a bold vision to create a greenway with parks, walkways, bikepaths, restored wetlands and community empowerment along 32 miles of River. Challenges associated with River access, recreation, safety, water quality and even concrete removal – while maintaining flood protection – all must be addressed to transform Los Angeles’ urban River into a source of civic pride and pleasure.

2008-10-066:00 pmRevisions to Pasadena's Tree-Protection OrdinanceNOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING PUBLIC COMMENT ON REVISIONS TO THE CITY’S TREE-PROTECTION ORDINANCE (Removal of Protected Trees on Private Property) The City has had a tree protection ordinance since 2002. During these six years, requests to remove public trees and protected native, specimen, and landmark trees have gone through a review process. This regulatory review has saved hundreds of trees that might otherwise be removed, and has led to extensive new planting of replacement trees. Recently, the City's Urban Forestry Advisory Committee—and others—have suggested changes to the ordinance, especially the regulations controlling removal of protected trees on private property. Acting on these suggestions, the City is inviting a cross-section of community-home owners, developers, arborists, architects, board and commission members, neighborhood organizations, and community groups to join in a public discussion about the tree protection ordinance. Public comment will begin with a public workshop hosted by the City’s Design Commission focusing on removals of protected trees on private property. DATE: Monday, October 6 TIME: 6:00 P.M. PLACE: Senior Center (Scott Pavilion), 85 E. 2008-10-066:00 pmREVISIONS TO TREE PROTECTION ORDINANCE MEETING ON POSSIBLE REVISIONS TO TREE PROTECTION ORDINANCE The public is invited to comment on possible revisions to the city of Pasadena’s tree protection ordinance, including regulations on private property. Since its inception in 2002, hundreds of trees have been saved through regulatory review of requests to remove public trees and protected native, specimen, and landmark trees. The ordinance has also led to an extensive planting of replacement trees. A public workshop hosted by the city’s Design Commission will be held to discuss the tree ordinance. The meeting will begin with a summary of the current ordinance and will allow for discussion on a variety of issues surrounding trees on private property. Homeowners, developers, arborists, architects, boards and commissions, neighborhood organizations and community groups are asked to join in this assessment. A future meeting will include developing specific recommendations to improve the ordinance. Updates, meeting notices, progress reports and background research can be found at cityofpasadena.net/treeprotection. 2008-10-278:00 pmProfitable Solutions to Climate ChangeClimate protection, like the Hubble Space Telescope's mirror, got spoiled by a sign error: in fact, climate solutions are not costly but profitable, because saving fuel costs less than buying fuel. Many leading companies are making billions of dollars' profit by cutting their carbon intensity or emissions at rates. When politicians who lament climate protection's supposed costs, burdens, and sacrifices join the parallel universe of practitioners who routinely achieve profits, jobs, and competitive advantage by wasting less fuel, the political obstacles will dissolve faster than any glacier. Amory Lovins, an internationally recognized expert on energy independence, is Chairman and Chief Scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute. Newsweek called Lovins "one of the Western world's most influential energy thinkers," and he has been described by The Economist as an "energy visionary" who "sounded the first alarm about the potential damage that climate change might bring." His nearly four decades of advocacy for resource efficiency, energy innovation, and holistic design have finally captured the world's attention because of today's interrelated energy and climate issues. The Chen-Huang Sustainable Energy Series is underwritten by the Chen-Huang Endowed Energy Seminar Fund, which was established with a gift from Marina Chen and her husband, Chi-Fu Huang, in June 2006. Chen is a Caltech alumna who received her master's degree in 1980 and her Ph.D. in 1983, both in computer science. The seminar series is directed by Nathan S. Lewis, Caltech's George L. Argyros Professor and professor of chemistry.
