Ave. 26 just north of downtown L.A., Friends of the Los Angeles River invites you to take part in the presentation and discussion of a study by the Harvard Graduate School of Design's Landscape Architecture Department of the Los Angeles River through downtown. Funded by a major grant from the MRCA, the Sponsored Studio spent four months studying the river and the riverfront from the Arroyo Seco four miles south to the city limits at Vernon, perhaps the most intractably industrial and inaccessible stretch of the entire river. The results incorporate housing, schools, parks, roads, bike trails, commerce, industry riparian restoration and much more, a blue print for revitalization of both downtown and the East Side. We urge you to join us for the session and help shape this effort to bring the Los Angeles River greenway to the heart of the city.

Environmental Roundtable -- Wildlife Habitat and Native Vegetation of the South Coast Region -- the San Gabriel Mountains Regional Conservancy (Conservancy) will hold the next environmental roundtable in its 2001-02 series. The University of California Cooperative Extension will host and co-sponsor the February Roundtable. The public is invited to participate in this free event to be held at the University of California Cooperative Extension Center - Los Angeles County, 2 Coral Circle, Building B, 2nd Floor, in Monterey Park.

The Conservancy's annual Environmental Roundtable Series provides a great opportunity for citizens to hear about the projects, people, and current issues impacting the communities of the San Gabriel Valley and Mountains. This series is focusing on a theme of RE-CONNECTING, RE-WILDING, AND RE-DISCOVERING THE SAN GABRIEL. The February Roundtable will continue the theme by exploring the wildlife habitat and native vegetation of the South Coast region. What new discoveries are being made? How is it possible that urban communities and wildlife co-exist in LA? What does our exceptional species biodiversity in southern California require to survive for future generations? What habitat protection and restoration efforts are currently underway? The Conservancy will present a panel of speakers to answer these questions:

  • ELLEN MACKEY, REPRESENTING THE LOS ANGELES AND SAN GABRIEL RIVERS WATERSHED COUNCIL - Assessing existing habitat in the LA and San Gabriel River corridors and their tributaries.

  • KRISTEEN PENROD, SOUTH COAST WILDLANDS PROJECT - Moving forward to protect and restore the top ten habitat linkage hot spots through the South Coast Missing Linkages Report.

  • DAN COOPER, NATIONAL AUDUBON SOCIETY - Protecting and restoring pockets of native habitat in Debs Park and the Lower Arroyo Seco in urban northeast Los Angeles.

NewTown returns to Pasadena's Lower Arroyo Seco to address the one
universally voiced complaint to last year's highly successful Trail
Markers I..... the ghastly September! This year, we invite the
public to come to the heat to get cool with 20 site-specific artistic
installations with a theme of water. Artists have answered our
thematic challenge in 20 different ways: sharing frozen confections
from Pasadena's water; sit-down visits in a walk-in swamp cooler;
1920's flapper water-drops; a percussive Rainbird duet; an arid and
ominous seascape, and more. Faux water, real water, frozen water,
misted water, conceptual water, colored water in tubes, water
shadows, shimmering illusions and refreshing realities all making for
an easy, refreshing and stimulating walk through one of Pasadena's
loveliest and most fascinating locales.

Arroyo restoration presentation set

A vision for environmental restoration of the Arroyo Seco will be presented at a meeting of the Sierra Club-Pasadena Group at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena Dr., Pasadena.

Eileen Takata, conservation planning coordinator for North East Trees, and Tim Brick, a director of the Arroyo Seco Foundation, will give an illustrated program, "Balancing Recreation and Habitat Restoration in Pasadena's Arroyo Seco.'

Their program will focus on implications for Pasadena of the Arroyo Seco Watershed Restoration Feasibility Study, a cooperative project of North East Trees and the Arroyo Seco Foundation. The study's purpose is to develop an environmentally sensitive and sustainable plan to manage and restore all of the 46-square-mile Arroyo Seco watershed, stretching from the San Gabriel Mountains to the stream's confluence with the Los Angeles River.

The watershed study was released in May as the city of Pasadena was releasing its Master Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Report for the six miles of the Arroyo Seco within Pasadena. The city's plan will be reviewed by city agencies and eventually go before the Pasadena City Council for decision.

There is a tenuous line between controlling nature and destroying it.
Ironically, many of the natural attributes that first drew a westward
migrating population to settle in southern California have been lost
or destroyed as a consequence of the success of the resulting
civilization.

Now, more that 60 years after the Arroyo Seco was tamed, there is a
growing desire to unleash nature and allow a little chaos back into
the equation. The Arroyo Foundation in conjunction with Northeast
Trees and the San Gabriel Streams Watershed Council have developed a
study outlining how local, state, and federal agencies can partially
restore the 22-mile-long Arroyo Seco and its tributaries to a more
natural state, while still providing protection from periodic
flooding. The plan argues that in addition to restoring habitat
areas within the 46-square-mile Arroyo Seco watershed, there is an
opportunity to create additional recreational areas.

Our October 4th First Friday Forum will provide the authors and
proponents of the Arroyo Seco Master Plan an opportunity to discuss
their plan with Chapter members and guests. More information about
the plan is available on the Arroyo Seco Foundation web site at:
www.arroyoseco.org/Watershedstudy.htm
