The South Pasadena High School Environment Club hosted its second community planting at the local Arroyo Seco Wildlife Park on the morning of January 26. Under the guidance of AP Environmental Science teacher Don Wielenga, twelve students worked together to install twenty five new plants to the park, all of which were species indigenous to California. The planting lasted approximately three hours and nearly doubled the amount of shrubs currently in the park.

The club enjoyed a marked improvement in student turnout and materials available in contrast to its first planting event on November 23, primarily due to a recent increase in club bulletin announcements and Facebook activity. Most of the plants and materials were purchased with a grant of $250 from the SPHS PTSA that the club was awarded less than a month ago.

“The most surprising aspect of today’s planting was everyone’s ability to collaborate efficiently. We had an impressive turn-out, and all the volunteers made the experience not only meaningful, but also a enjoyable and full of laughs,” said club president Betty Soibel.

The club will maintain a vigorous watering regimen to ensure that the newly planted shrubs survive and hopes to move from shrub plantings to tree plantings.
