The county Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to allow the county Parks & Recreation Department to apply for the grant, which is administered through the state. It is the first of several grants the county will apply for to fund completion of a trail connecting the Arroyo Seco with Eaton Canyon. \"This is just the beginning,\' said Larry Hensley, chief of planning for Parks & Recreation. The Altadena Crest Trail Restoration Working Group, a volunteer group of Altadena residents and county employees, is studying the gaps and proposed new routes. The western gap, also called the La Vina gap, focuses on land around the La Vina gated community. The housing development cut off several trails that once crossed the mesa on which the houses are built, Altadena hikers say. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich spurred formation of the trail group after the county began investigating whether the developer of La Vina fulfilled all conditions the county imposed on the development. Marketing materials for La Vina showed a public trail outside the development. \"The supervisor believes that the trail should be completed. It\'s a historic trail and a vital resource for hikers and equestrians in the community now and the future, and this action is a step forward in the completion process,\' Antonovich spokesman Tony Bell said. -- Becky Oskin can be reached at (626) 578-6300, Ext. 4451, or by e-mail at becky.oskin@sgvn.com. |
