Content: | After 20 years, the Pasadena Mountain Bike Club still offers weekend rides and monthly meetings, but it could use a few more members. \"The late 1990s was really our heyday. In fact, that was the case for mountain bike clubs all over,\' president Martin Gomez said. \"Now, membership is down and participation in mountain biking is down, period, so we would like to bring more young people into the sport.\' The club, open to riders from beginners to experts, meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at Pasadena Cyclery and Fuddruckers restaurant in Hastings Ranch. The next meeting is July 7. At meetings, the 50 or so current members ranging in age from 20-60 discuss upcoming rides and issues currently impacting the sport. A U.S. Forest Service revision that might change where mountain bikers can and cannot ride has been discussed at recent meetings. Most of the weekend rides, held Saturday and Sunday, are in the front country of the Angeles National Forest and cyclists from beginners to more advanced are invited to participate. Gomez said the club used to have a regular beginner ride, but now beginners are invited to ride with other levels of cyclists on a weekend ride. A more experienced rider usually will bring up the rear to make sure all participants are OK. \"We have a guy in the back who will wait,\' he said. The next ride is Sunday at 8 a.m. It will be the Brown Mountain/Ken Burton trail loop above Altadena. Riders should meet at the Arroyo Jet Propulsion Laboratory lot at the corner of Windsor and Ventura streets. The ride leader is Doug Sullivan. On July 1, there with be a Moab, Utah trip, with Bob Britton as the leader. All rides are weather permitting and helmets are required. Other recommended equipment is water, lunch money, a light jacket, spare tube and food. For more information, check out the Web site at www.pmbc.org. The Snow Summit Amateur Cup No.2 will be held this weekend, June26-27, at Snow Summit Resort at Big Bear Lake. The Team Big Bear event will include cross-country, downhill and junior racing. New for 2004 is expanded junior categories. Junior beginners will race the beginner cross-country course and/or the beginner downhill course. Junior sports will race the sport cross-country course and/or the sport downhill course. Some variations might exist on either course. For more information, check out www.teambigbear.com .
