Authorities today identified a 2-year-old girl who died after accidentally falling into the Arroyo Seco while on an outing with her uncle, who was babysitting her, police said.

Lourdes Vega died at a hospital after being rescued from the water yesterday afternoon, said Detective Augie Caballero of the Los Angeles Police Department\'s Hollenbeck Station.

The girl\'s uncle had taken Lourdes and two of her siblings to Montecito Park, near Avenue 52 and the Arroyo Seco, and was in an area that was off- limits when the girl fell into the water, Caballero said.

\"It was fenced off, and they went through a hole in the fence,\" Caballero said. \"The uncle said he thought it was safe, and said he had played there when he was a child.\"

The man tried in vain to rescue his niece, and a passerby called 911. Firefighters went to the area about 1:30 p.m. yesterday and deployed there and downstream.

The child was spotted floating in the Los Angeles River just south of the San Bernardino (10) Freeway, said Jim Wells of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Two helicopter crews were involved in the operation. A firefighter lowered from a helicopter plucked the child from the waters. Paramedics used advanced life support to try to save the girl, who was in very critical condition.

She was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, but was in full cardiac arrest when she arrived, Wells said.

Police will present a report to the District Attorney\'s office for review, Caballero said.
