Content: | WITH a view toward a May 9 environmental hearing by the Pasadena City Council on the Rose Bowl, ongoing conversations related to inviting or disinviting the NFL to town are heating up. Perhaps you\'ve been polled, or will be polled, in a citywide survey sponsored by the Rose Bowl Operating Company on the notion of pro football in the Arroyo Seco. The verdict is still out, but we\'ll report on the results next week. That\'s when the good people of the West Pasadena Residents Association will start pointing out that the questions were written in such a way as to elicit a positive response, which will no doubt be true enough. As I merely noted here a few months ago, the WPRA\'s own survey questions for its members were written so as to elicit a negative response. Such is life when the entity asking the questions desires a certain outcome. The Friends of the Rose Bowl, Pasadena Heritage and other interested parties are gearing up for the battle. It\'s going to be interesting. Reader Margaret McAustin says it was always thus. Doing some research on the Rankin House on the Ambassador campus, Margaret came across a Star-News front page of May 9, 1925 almost exactly 80 years ago. In a story about Pasadena Realty Board recommendations about visitors\' experiences in what was then a town full of tourists, our reporter wrote: \"The need for enhancing Pasadena as a summer resort was discussed by the Realtors, Mr. Blankenhorn contending that concerts in the Rose Bowl was an excellent idea which had been given up because Hollywood was developing it. He saw no reason why Hollywood should claim sole rights in such a phase of entertainment ...\' Well, neither do I, but the Hollywood Bowl was nonetheless built and thrives, so that the Rose Bowl is unlikely to compete with it on a regular basis. There\'ll be a lot more here later about this, but do mark your calendars for one Rose Bowl concert you don\'t want to miss: the Pasadena POPS Orchestra on July 4 before the fireworks. |
