Left wondering

Representatives of Save South Orange Grove appeared before the City Council to request the council not certify the Final Environmental Impact Report for the NFL/Rose Bowl Stadium Renovation Project on the grounds that the EIR is inadequate because it did not study the Pasadena (110) freeway as a regional access point to the Rose Bowl, despite the signs on the freeway, which direct traffic to the Rose Bowl through the residential neighborhoods.

Nor did it study the impact of traffic on Orange Grove south of California.

However, for those portions of Orange Grove studied, the EIR determined that South Orange Grove will suffer significant, unmitigated traffic impact, yet failed to recommend any mitigation measures to protect the neighborhoods south of California, which will undoubtedly be impacted as a result.

We feel this is a very important issue, particularly to our supporters who live on South Orange Grove and in the immediate surrounding neighborhoods.

Upon the conclusion of our public appearance, our Councilman Steve Madison, didn\'t address our concerns, but instead oddly began to question the organizational structure of Save South Orange Grove, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit corporation, our contributors and validity of our representation of those contributors.

His peculiar response to our appearance leaves us wondering whether our representative thinks the concerns of the hundreds of people who live on and near South Orange Grove are legitimate.

There goes our pride

The NFL/Rose Bowl issue presses on as we the citizens of Pasadena sit back and allow the National Football League to manipulate our city government into selling our world-renowned heritage and landmark, our Rose Bowl our pride. That\'s right, we are giving our city officials a blank check to ruin our city, and to sell our historical icon.

Are we ready to see our Rose Bowl modernized into an unrecognizable generic football stadium? I understand the Rose Bowl will suffer a reduction in capacity from about 90,000 to around 60,000 seats. The city government will probably consider building apartments in the stadium to make up for this seating loss. Based on their history, who knows?

Are we ready to let the city officials throw out Pasadena\'s college football traditions in favor of boosting the city\'s coffers? Are we ready to see our Arroyo Seco destroyed in order to accommodate a private venture during this time of historical restoration in the Arroyo?

Are we ready to allow the proliferation of uncontrolled development so evident on many empty street corner lots throughout the city to continue on into the Rose Bowl/Arroyo?

If you don\'t let your voice be heard, be prepared for the consequences. The future of the Rose Bowl rests with us, and we must act quickly. City Hall is acting fast in order to avoid further protestations of their preordained plans to sell our history.

Write to your local area representative in City Hall, write to the preservationist society, attend City Hall meetings, write to the planning commission, and talk with your friends, but do it now. The history of Pasadena is fading fast; save it. Act with pride, stand up and be heard. Save our history. Save the Rose Bowl.
