City officials announced Monday that they have selected an engineering design company to draft a master plan for revitalizing the Los Angeles River.

The city will pay Pasadena-based Tetra Tech Inc. $2.5 million over the next 18 months to devise a plan to clean the river, build parks and propose rezoning ideas for housing, commercial space and restoration.

The plan would focus on 30 miles of river from Canoga Park to Boyle Heights and would emphasize water quality as well as sustainable development.
