MOST any new earthen trail in the urban wasteland is all right by me.
But I was particularly glad to get a card in the mail this week announcing the coming dedication of the John C. Crowley Trail linking Pasadena\'s Arroyo Seco floor to the Linda Vista neighborhood.

The trail-in-the-making parallels Salvia Canon Road. With the rain-related closing of Parkview Avenue to traffic, it\'s the only way to get from northern Linda Vista Avenue down to the Brookside Golf Course or the Rose Bowl. So it\'s not exactly a natural idyll, with most of its course running just a few feet away from the asphalt.

But, speaking for the amblers and dog walkers and runners among us: We\'ll take it. Mildly sylvan beats nothing at all. And this is a trail that is going to be heavily used indeed, especially on football game days, when some fans get to the stadium by walking down from neighborhood parties.

Sure, you can walk on the roadway. But there are no sidewalks on the street, and though there\'s always been a rough path along the south side of Salvia, there are places where it\'s currently high-weedy rough walking or just plain impassable.

And I dig the fact that the trail is named after the Honorable John Crowley, longtime councilman and former mayor of Pasadena, whose grand house The Oaks sits above Linda Vista under a beautiful stand of trees.

John does most of his walking with a cane these days, but keeps a keen eye on Pasadena governance issues still. Among many other civic accomplishments, he solved an incredibly vexing Pasadena budget crisis in the mid-1980s with a complicated bailout that kept the city solvent, and all residents owe him big-time.

I\'m sure that John and Barbara and their kids will be on hand at the trail dedication. So come out Saturday, Sept. 24 at 9 a.m. to celebrate more good news for quiet recreation in the Arroyo Seco.
