Content: | The things that have piled up in my mental absence are very random and include: * * * Raccoons we\'ve got in spades, but their little relatives the ringtail cat I\'ve never seen. Lonnie Fehr, the host for the Millard Canyon campground above Altadena, captured on film one banging about recently, though, and it\'s said to be the first confirmed sighting of one in the area, according to the infallible Conservator, the newsletter of the Altadena Foothills Conservancy. Join up with that trail-preserving, open space-saving group by sending an e-mail to nsteele@altadenafoothills.org Talking of Altadena newsletters, The Echo, from the Altadena Historical Society, has more reviews from outside our area of that rare beastie, the local history that isn\'t written with a Chamber of Commerce spin. Such a book is Michele Zack\'s \"Altadena: Between Wilderness and City,\" already glowingly reviewed locally. But the Southern California Quarterly calls it \"a major achievement, not just for its author, but for the whole community.\" California History says: \"beautiful, intelligent and thorough ... does not shy away from topics such as smog and anti-integration that do not glorify the city\'s (sic) heritage.\" California History Action: \"Zack\'s work sets new standards for local history.\" We knew that. But nice to hear our opinions ratified. larry.wilson@sgvn.com Larry Wilson is editor of the Pasadena Star-News. His column appears Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. |
