Welcome back!

It has been a little while since the last issue of eStream. We took a break over the summer to develop this all-new format. We hope you like it!

Each month we will let you know what’s new at River Network; highlight the work of one of our Partner organizations; share the latest in Tim Palmer’s exclusive series “Dispatches from the Rivers”; and feature some of the many individuals, organizations, businesses, foundations and agencies that make our work possible.

So go ahead - get your feet wet in the new eStream! We welcome your feedback and ideas for future articles. And we encourage you to e-mail each month’s issue to at least one friend. That’s one of the easiest ways to spread the word and continue to build our network.

Thanks for your interest. We look forward to staying in touch with you in the New Year!

Dispatches From the Rivers
An exclusive eStream series by Author/Photographer, Tim Palmer

Elk River, Oregon

Every river depends on the great weather systems around it, and so I often think of my quest for river photographs as a pursuit of weather as much as water. I love to catch the rivers in-character, with storms overhead, rain misting the air, or snow speckling the sky and drifting on the ground.

Rather than photographing still-life scenes, I prefer, when I can, to show what happens at a river, and being there at the height of storms is one window to this ultimate essence of river life. Everybody knows that rain and snow are what...

Santa Fe Watershed Association, New Mexico

The pristine, perennial Santa Fe River that emerges from the wilderness of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains east of Santa Fe City is transformed into a dry ditch by the time it runs through the city.

The fact that the Santa Fe River, which gave birth to the city of Santa Fe more than 400 years ago, is now a dry ditch, has become accepted as normal by an entire generation of Santa Fe residents. The memory of the river supporting trout and feeding irrigation canals that watered a vast acreage of agricultural fields has faded into the lore of history.

The Santa Fe Watershed Association (SFWA) formed in 1997 to return the Santa Fe River to a living river, from its mountain headwaters to the Rio Grande, balancing human uses with environmental protection and restoring the heart to the Santa Fe community.

Over the coming year, River Network will provide intensive assistance to SFWA in its efforts to launch the new Santa Fe “Living River” Initiative.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since 1988, River Network\'s mission has been to help people understand, protect and restore rivers and their watersheds. With headquarters in Portland, Oregon and field staff around the country, today we provide ongoing support to more than 700 watershed protection groups in all 50 states, Canada and beyond.

Our Vision

We envision a day when all fresh waters are safe for drinking and swimming, and when fish are naturally abundant and safe to eat.
We envision a day when healthy aquatic ecosystems support balanced, self-sustaining populations of native plants and animals, both in the water and on land.
We envision a sustained effort over generations of a national movement for watershed protection.
In order to achieve this vision, we will continue to help people build strong community organizations, assess the health of their local waters, and use the full range of tools available to clean up, protect and restore rivers, lakes, groundwater, wetlands and streams.

We hope you too will get involved in your community. There are many resources available on our website to help you get started!

Connecting people and saving rivers,

River Network
