Content: | ARROYO STREAM NOW OPEN The completion of the Central Arroyo Stream Restoration Program in Pasadena, a model for cleaning up urban waterways, was marked with a dedication ceremony Wednesday, Aug. 27. Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and Tim Brick, managing director of the Arroyo Seco Foundation, spoke at the event describing in great detail the importance of the Arroyo. The $2.5 million Best Management Practices project covers more than 20 acres near the Rose Bowl Stadium and includes water quality islands to filter oil and grease runoff in the Brookside Park parking lot, removal of invasive plant species, planting native California trees, reconfiguring the streambed to foster reintroduction of the native Arroyo Chub fish and installation of more than 400 trash capture screens to prevent litter and debris from entering the Arroyo Seco stream. Major funding for this project has been provided by the California State Water Resources Control Board with additional support from city of Pasadena. The Arroyo Seco Foundation is the lead agency; technical support and construction have been provided by Camp, Dresser & McKee (CDM) Inc. The effort is part of Pasadena’s Central Arroyo Master Plan to restore the natural habitat and historical recreation uses to this portion of the Arroyo Seco. Photographs by Terry Miller |
