Content: | A sinkhole shut down the northbound lanes of the Pasadena Freeway for hours as transportation workers rushed to repair the chasm. The problem began at 6 p.m. Wednesday with the report of a large pothole near the center divider north of Fair Oaks Avenue in South Pasadena, said a spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation. The hole spread across the left and center northbound lanes until a full closing was ordered at 1:40 a.m. Thursday. Road crews excavated the area and replaced a 20-foot section of a drainage pipe that had eroded and was leaking water. The narrow, winding road, which opened in 1940 as Arroyo Seco Parkway, was California’s first freeway. |
