Content: | DON\'T look now - or do; get up above Devil\'s Gate Dam and do - but the city of Pasadena is quietly at work to bring back the spectre of a 1,200-car parking garage and a 50-foot-wide road through what is supposed to be the pristine Hahamongna Watershed Park. Yes, it\'s hard to be pristine in what was once operated as a massive rock quarry. But that\'s what the decade-plus effort to recover for passive recreation the open area of the Upper Arroyo Seco has been all about. There once indeed was a plan for parking and a road - but open-space, hiking and equestrian advocates thought they\'d beat back the misguided infrastructure proposal in 2003. All references to a road, to another surface lot and to a garage were then taken out of official documents about planning for the park. Now they have resurfaced in a Master Plan Addendum, and those who have fought for so long to protect the restoration plans for Hahamongna are understandably furious. Some in City Hall apparently thought that they could just slip this back in without anyone noticing. Now, I\'ve heard it said, those same bureaucrats say that they\'re forcing the building and the hardscape through whether the greenies like it or not. Who rules in Pasadena, La Canada Flintridge, Altadena and our mutual Angeles National Forest - the people who have fought for the wild area or the concrete-pourers who can\'t stand to leave well enough alone? larry.wilson@sgvn.com Public Editor Larry Wilson\'s blog is http://insidesocal.com/publiceye. |
