Davis approves funds for river projects

LOS ANGELES -- Eight grants totaling nearly $10 million for open space restoration and acquisition projects along the San Gabriel and Los Angeles rivers were announced Monday by Gov. Gray Davis. 

The San Gabriel River-area grants area as follows:

  • $1 million to the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy for the city of Azusa to acquire and construct a 35-acre park along the San Gabriel River bank.

  • $1 million to the city of Lakewood to develop open space adjacent to the San Gabriel River.

The Los Angeles River-area grants are as follows:

  • $3 million to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority to purchase a 238-acre property in the Verdugo Mountains of Glendale.
  • $2 million to the city of Maywood for construction of a 7.3 acre river- front park.
  • $1.7 million to the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy of the city of Paramount to expand Ralph C. Dills Park.
  • $1 million to the city of Pasadena to restore the stream corridor of the northern and southern Arroyo Seco Channel.
  • $152,000 to the city of Lynwood to develop a natural park and bike trail along the Los Angeles River.
  • $80,000 to the city of South Gate to design and construct an entry and exit for the Hollydale Regional Park Bike Trail.
