The Poles in the Arroyo                                                                        June 8, 2002

Would that I could literally put down the massive poles installed just inside the chain link at Brookside Golf Course to hold up netting that keeps sliced and hooked golf balls from hitting runners, walkers, bikers, motorists.

It’s a classic case of overkill, of creating a big new problem in attempts to correct the old one. Yes, at least one person of the tens of thousands who exercise around the Rose Bowl was hit and injured by a wayward ball. But the size and placement of these supposed solutions is just unreal. They stick up above the edge of the Arroyo Seco on both sides, intruding into what was a great view for eons, and they are really ugly.

A city survey shows they are 75 feet high. Neighbors, not to mention thousands who flock to the arroyo every day for its natural beauty, were never given notice of the construction. Even given hackers like me, the poles don’t need to be that high to protect the jogging classes. The city, charged with keeping the arroyo beautiful for all Southern Califor-nians, needs to address its error.
