CONFLUENCE OUTREACH WORKER
The Arroyo Seco Foundation seeks a fulltime Bilingual (Spanish/English) Community Outreach Worker to manage and expand education and action programs supporting water conservation, environmental stewardship and river restoration along the Arroyo Seco and the Los Angeles River.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct outreach programs about environmental issues, including water conservation, watershed management and river restoration in cooperation with neighborhood groups, local agencies, school groups, athletic organizations, and cooperating watershed/urban nature organizations along the Arroyo Seco and near its Confluence with the Los Angeles River.
- Organize and make presentations to neighborhood organizations, youth groups and other community based organizations about watershed issues.
- Mobilize Latino support for environmental stewardship and river revitalization programs by developing and expanding partnerships with Latino neighborhood and community-based organizations in East and Northeast Los Angeles as well as Pasadena and Altadena
- Expand nature-based recreational opportunities for the communities of East and Northeast Los Angeles.
- Develop and translate Arroyo Seco program outreach materials, including electronic media and web content, for Spanish-speaking residents.
- Promote community involvement and empowerment through participation and helping shape the Cornfield/Arroyo Seco Confluence Specific Plan now being developed by the City of Los Angeles as well as other green initiatives.
- Cooperate with team members on other Arroyo Seco educational activities and projects as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the ASF Managing Director.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education: B.A. or B.S. from an accredited institution preferred. Academic background in environmental science or related topic would be beneficial.
Experience: Minimum two years community outreach and organizing experience reaching youth, families, and/or schools in under-served communities; Sensitivity to the cultural differences in communities along the Arroyo Seco and LA River. Good rapport and strong oral presentation skills are essential. Experience in working on environmental issues a plus. Demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship
Technical Skills: Fluency in both written and spoken Spanish and English. Cmputer proficiency is required, including knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Power Point and Excel. Web design and database management skills are pluses. Must have good administrative skills, including the ability to track projects, file timely reports, and prepare grant invoicing.
Organizational Skills: Must possess a good work ethic and ability to work independently, be conscientious, have an eye for detail, and be a team player promoting leadership among diverse constituencies.
COMPENSATION & WORK SCHEDULE
This position is a fulltime based upon a 40-hour workweek. The position if funded for one year beginning immediately. Compensation is $25 an hour inclusive of benefits.
