Celebrate Hahamongna Nursery Sunday, Nov. 1st!

Join us for Twilight at Hahamongna Nursery. This festive gathering will feature tours of the nursery, light refreshments, music and a silent auction.

The plants grown at Hahamongna Cooperative Nursery are not only drought tolerant, but they also are native to our region. The seeds were gathered in the Arroyo Seco and will be uniquely suited to thrive within the Arroyo. Nursery stock will support the habitat restoration elements of the Arroyo Seco Canyon Project.

Help ASF Win $100,000: Bring Back the River!

We need your help in our campaign to Bring Back the River and restore the Arroyo Seco and the greater Los Angeles River Watershed! LA 2050 in conjunction with the Goldhirsh Foundation is providing ten $100,000 grants to fund community organizations throughout Los Angeles.

Between October 20th and November 3rd, you can vote for the Arroyo Seco Foundation and others in a burgeoning campaign to build a sustainable vision of Los Angeles in 2050. Our goal is to organize Arroyo Seco communities to support the Army Corps of Engineers Plan to restore the Arroyo Seco Stream. This grant will also support our nursery at Hahamongna Watershed Park and help us restore the ecosystem with native plants. The Arroyo Seco Canyon Project – Stretching Vitally Needed Local Water Supplies

Droughts are powerful teachers, and the current California drought has brought powerful lessons. Perhaps the most important is that we need to do everything we can to stretch local water supplies. That’s what the Arroyo Seco Canyon Project is all about. The Canyon project will enhance local water resources by improving Pasadena’s intake on the Arroyo Seco stream and the spreading basins that allow the water to percolate into the local groundwater basin for later use. The Canyon Project, a partnership between Pasadena Water & Power Department and the Arroyo Seco Foundation, is an integrated project that will also provide tremendous benefits for the habitat and aquatic life in the Arroyo.

On June 1, 2015, the Pasadena City Council unanimously approved an environmental study detailing the project’s scope, impacts and benefits. Since then a group called Project Soliton has filed a lawsuit challenging some aspects of the project. We believe the project has been carefully prepared and the environmental issues involved have been diligently studied. We look forward to moving ahead with the Arroyo Canyon Project soon.

Let’s Reduce Styrofoam and Plastic Waste

The Arroyo Seco Foundation has been sponsoring cleanups of the Arroyo stream for many years. When our volunteers pick up the trash and debris that clogs the stream, one of the main constituents is always Styrofoam. Pasadena has adopted a Zero Waste policy and is now considering a ban on certain types of polystyrene (Styrofoam) containers. The City Council will vote on an ordinance to ban Styrofoam food and beverage containers in December. Ninety three California jurisdictions already have some form of Styrofoam ban in effect. If you live in Pasadena, please contact your City Council member and urge them to support the ban and other stiff measures to reduce plastic waste.
