Stewards of the Arroyo Seco

Hydrology of the San Gabriel Mountains
National Monument Expansion

October 1, 2024 --To understand the significance of the expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, it is necessary to understand the role that the water resources and hydrology of the expansion territory have played in shaping Los Angeles County.

Watersheds of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Expansion

President Barack Obama established the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in 2014, but the original territory neglected some of the most important treasures of the Angeles National Forest.

This paper, "A Brief Hydrological Description of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Expansion," was produced by Jonathan Frame, a PhD engineer from the University of Alabama, and Tim Brick, Executive Director of the Stewards of the Arroyo Seco, as part of the campaign to win support for expanding the territory of the original monument to include the western portion of the Angeles National Forest.

On May 2, 2024, President Joseph Biden added an additional 100,000 acres to the original monument to include Tujunga Canyon, the Arroyo Seco, Eaton Canyon, Santa Anita Canyon, and other gems of the upper watershed of the Los Angeles River system.
