Here Are Important Reports on Rainbow Trout in the Arroyo Seco

Translocation of Rainbow Trout to the Arroyo Seco - 2020

This is the official report on the translocation of 469 Rainbow Trout from the West Fork of the San Gabriel River into the Arroyo Seco following the Bobcat Fire

Followup: Translocation of Trout to the Arroyo Seco - 2021

This report is a follow up to the Bobcat Fire Fish Rescue Report and focuses on the translocation of rescued native coastal rainbow trout. A total of 436 Rainbow Trout is observed.

LA Times: Trout in the Arroyo Seco - 2021

The LAT reports on the trout relocation and claims that the quest to save rainbow trout has fueled a water war in Pasadena.

CDFW Trout Report - 2022

The number of rainbow trout observed increases from 436 in 2021 to 2092 in 2022, an excellent indicator of the success of the relocation program.

CDFW Report - 2023

A decline in the number of total fish is noted (from 2092 in 2022 to 657 in 2023) despite the wet winter.

NOAA: Southern California Steelhead Still Endangered - 2023

"Sharp declines make southern steelhead runs the most critically endangered on the West Coast."

CDFW Report - 2024

The number of Rainbow Trout observed has increased to 4404, a remarable increase from 2023 (567). "Most of the fish were categorized as 3-5.9 inches, with 1753 individuals (41.7%) observed in this size class. In 2023, most fish observed were in the 6-8.9 inches size class."

CDFW Report - 2025 Preliminary Data

The number of Rainbow Trout observed was 3815, a remarable estimate considering how dry the year has been.
