Job Description: Program Assistant – Arroyo Seco and Brookside Park Best Management Practices Program


The Arroyo Seco Foundation seeks a program assistant to conduct tasks related to the Arroyo Seco and Brookside Park Best Management Practices Program (ASBPBMP), an environmental restoration program located in Pasadena. The position, funded by a grant that extends through August, 2008, requires a mix of administrative, educational and outreach experience.


Program Description: The Arroyo Seco and Brookside Park BMP Program (ASBPBMP) is an environmental restoration program sponsored by the Arroyo Seco Foundation working with the City of Pasadena. The program will utilize an integrated watershed approach to addressing the issues of water quality improvement, habitat restoration, flood management, recreational enhancements, and educational benefits in the Central Arroyo portion of the Arroyo Seco Watershed. BPBMP consists of five major components: Central Arroyo Stream restoration, trash capture inserts in subwatershed drains, parking lot improvements in Lot I of the Rose Bowl, trail/habitat improvements, and public outreach.


The project area encompasses a two-mile stretch of the Arroyo Seco south of Devil’s Gate Dam and north of the 134 Freeway. Brookside Park serves as a link to the more naturalized areas north of the site to the Lower Arroyo Seco. The project will enhance riparian and upland habitat for native plant and animal species, including the Arroyo Chub. Public outreach related to the program will increase awareness of local residents about watershed and water quality issues. The Arroyo Seco Stream Team will serve as watershed docents educating stakeholders and the general public about stream water quality and watershed stewardship.


Skills Sought

  • administrative skills including timely reports and invoicing
  • general knowledge of environmental management and educational activities
  • experience in community outreach, environmental education and publicity
  • coordination of program activities on behalf of ASF, including Arroyo Seco Stream Team and volunteer involvement in program implementation and monitoring
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills is required; website management skills are desirable

Terms – The position requires 30 hours per week through the grant implementation beginning immediately and extending through the end of August, 2008; $25 an hour. The program assistant will report directly to the Managing Director of the Arroyo Seco Foundation, working closely with City of Pasadena personnel, the design/build contractor, Camp Dresser McKee, and the Arroyo Seco Watershed Coordinator.
